Still a lot of work to do. Still experimenting with color and composition. The one thing I know I am keeping is the water fall on the lower right. I've brought the lake down to the foreground, added an observatory on the mountain. That will change somewhat. I think I might like that to eventually be an ivory color. Thought I'd go with a science fiction feel here instead of a castle thing, so I want the Observatory to have a little bit better look. I'm not satisfied with the fall in the back so tomorrow I may try more of a meandering type stream that comes out of the rocks and into a small fall. Feel free to offer criticism . The colors are a bit comic bookish right now, but that's ok since I'm still constructing things. I want the water to be crystal clear in the foreground when I'm done, so that rocks will be visible. Right now it's just color. I do think the darker rocks in the middle work better than when they were lighter. Not sure about the outline of those though, in how they contrast with the mountains in the background. Oil on canvas, 11x14.

My computer monitor is showing the blue in my painting very bright and very blue. Again, I will attribute this to my camera. When getting the correct blue, my mountains "wash out". Oh this one is fun. It is always exciting when a photo shoot just happens. We happened to see this guy attracting alot of giggles and smiles. His grandkids left for a ride and he was the designated babysitter. I waited for some time for him to turn in the direction of his friends so I could get all the noses heading in the same direction. Finally it happened and I got my photo.
It's just a blast observing life and capturing those moments in paint! This watercolor is 28" x 24".

This is the largest fish study that I have attempted. Twice the size

of any of my previous studies. I had started to increase the

watercolor studies of my dragonfly species, and

enjoyed being able to define more details in the work.

Below are my 3 latest dragonfly studies that I had previously

put up on this blog- all in the larger format, but I now

have the studies professionally shot to use on nate cards

and giclee prints.

A Note: Tomorrow, January 30th, I have been asked

by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission to be

part of Pennsylvania's Fly Fishing Heitage.

I will be painting a live demo of the Pink (Humpback) Salmon

and showcasing my work with native fish, especially trout.

Pepper Beach Park is one of many small parks along A1A in Fort Pierce, Fla. This park is on both sides of the highway--the beach side and the Intracoastal/Indian River side. We chose a niche on the river side. The weather was warm and comfortable, but the mosquitos were eating me alive this afternoon, so I left, having painted for only 2 hours. The bridge and figure were completed indoors, free of mosquitos.

If I had another life to live, I might like to be a police woman, no joke. The contrast between that and an artist's life of contemplation seems extreme. Anyhow, I was drawn to this image because of the peculiar balance between the masculine and feminine elements- the truck, the uniform, the city street and then the female face and hair in a blond bun.

Landscape painting can encompass just about anything. Here we have a scrap yard. This holds a lot of memories for me and a close friend who used this as their playground. The entire area is a cornucopia of shapes and colors, all waiting to be recycled. The large yellow machine on the top shears it all into small pieces before being shipped to a steel mill. I choose to paint it with snow because it introduces a lighter value and delineates the forms.

Gosh it's been so long between postings. I feel like the last two months have been a blur! It's been wonderful having my kids home from college, and all of the baking and the decorating. And now, finally the house is back in order and I have spent the past week locked in my studio. I was so happy to see all the beautiful tulips now available and dreams of spring are in my head. The planting catalogs are starting to appear and I am getting excited about new flowers to plant in my garden (that will eventually pose for me in my studio!) This all happened with hardly a trace of winter! So here is my first attempt at this year's tulips. I hope you like it.

I was stuck in a non-painting rut for quite awhile, only working on very small ATC's and 4 x 6 paintings until I finally crawled out of that rut with this one.

This is a painting from a still life photo painting challenge at Paint and DrawTogether blogspot from last year --which I never got around to do until now. It was drawn freehand and impressionistically. I started this painting with the students in my third Watercolor class to show them how to apply glazes, starting light, saving whites and make even brush stokes in the beginning of their paintings. I decided to finish it to show it to them in our next class this coming Tuesday. They saw the beginning stages and had the look on their faces like: "um...it's nice" and I could see some doubt in their eyes. I hope they see there's hope for them if only they persevere. I'm looking forward to see what they accomplish this week.

I pass by this marina every day and had plans to paint it. After visiting the site many times, however, I concluded that the scene was just a mess, with a conglomeration of crisscrossing lines and other verticals. It did not inspire me. But the push and pull positions of this group of palms, did interest me. Mother Nature certainly provides us with unique and beautiful subject matter.

I've added colored pencil over the watercolor pencil foundation (prior post). I enjoyed the face and am OK with it, for a new technique. I was looking forward to the hat and it totally didn't turn out the way I'd imagined. I must manage the planning stages better.
The background of my photo was blurry foliage, which I tried to indicate, mainly using the background to clarify the subject. But, it's not properly recessed.
I did learn the foundation is very important; all the areas with it turned out better than those without (aside, of course, from areas I left white for highlights).
I accomplished two "repairs": one where the nose meets the background, and one where the entire front of the hat needed to be moved back. Yikes!
All in all, an educational experience for someone who can learn. We'll see how I do with that!

This girl was having exuberant fun horsing around on Broad Street with her New Year's Day hat. I like the running pose I caught, and her very cheerful yellow sweatshirt.
It's dark and rainy today, so I had a little trouble getting a photo without glare. The New Year's Day hat is really a nice deep blue, but got washed out here.
Also- and a big also- the warm and wonderful artist Crystal Cook interviewed me on her blog!! Such great questions- it was fun to answer them.

After finishing with all projects that had to be finished for one of another reason, I'm back to my Gardenias. I'm getting close with finishing of initial tempera underpainting. This is the most time consuming and complicated part of this work what has to be perfect. When I'm finished with tempera I'll switch to oils and it will be much easier.

I think I've finally settled on my composition. I was never really satisfied with the direction of the painting up until now. The road/bridge thing wasn't doing it for me. I had done several.. several different concepts with the water.. from small pools to different shapes of streams and so forth, but nothing worked. So, I went with something a bit grander. This gives more importance to the water, as it should. I also think this makes the painting work more as a whole. Now, I just have to make this work by bringing out the detail, correct colors and refining. Oil on canvas, 11x14.

"Measured Steps" by Linda Benton McCloskey

This piece was completed right before my “fall” in late November. I worked on it using various shades of burgundy and pink, but just couldn’t resolve it. I added the orange and it still didn’t work. Finally after looking at it for several days, I added the vertical stripes…and it was resolved. This is beautiful in person. The photo doesn’t do justice to the piece - the textures and softness. Mixed Media (mostly acrylic) - 36 x 36 on canvas.

Florida has been mostly warm and lovely; perfect for painting inside or out. This painting, done, from photos I took on a coolish and breezy day, was painted indoors. My first outdoor painting was started at a local botanical garden. I will be returning next week with other plein air painters to finish it.

This painting is done on 16x20 textured wood panel. It started out as a high horizon with a waterfall. The waterfall turned out great, but the negative space was not good. It reminded me a big brown dam, which is fine if your looking for a painting of a big brown dam. I kept on hearing Led Zepplins "When The Levee Breaks" in my head. Great song, but not the look I was going for. I ended up retexturizing everything and sculpting the trees in the process. I then applied multiple acrylic washes and glazes. I was in Louisiana this fall. One of my favorite places to look for subject matter is farmer's markets and roadside vegetable stands. I found some really different melons at one of these and had to buy some to set up for a painting. I believe the long skinny one is called a snake melon. Very appropriate!

This happened during one of those days, what Jim and I spent in Jackson, Wyoming few month ago...
On our way from Yellowstone to Teton National Park we got to met huge herd of buffalo. Crowds of magnificent animals were roaming across of the valley, across of the highway and didn't care a bit about us, humans around and any of tour transportation needs. Traffic had to stop for a while... except for bison traffic!.. Even we lost some time and returned to Jackson very late, I got hundreds and hundreds of pictures of those hundreds and hundreds of buffalo. It was amazing experience what I hope will result in several future paintings. This is just first small study I did the other day. Oil sticks and oil with Liquin on panel.

I am not sure if I like the photo I have taken and might try to photograph it again. Painting wolves and foxes are similar to painting dogs so I challenge myself to try to paint them in their natural environment.

"MY SACRED PLACE" by Linda Benton McCloskey

This piece is quite different for me. When I paint, one of my priorities is value (contrast) and as you can see it has very little. This painting was completed in November of last year when I was in a very meditative mood. It was finished quickly listening to soft music. Normally I will look at a piece for several days or weeks and decide if it’s finished. With this particular piece I didn’t want to change a thing. It also has lots of soft lines which do not show up in the picture. Mixed Media - 40 x 30 on canvas.

I was fascinated by this species due to the dramatic mating colors

found on the male (I call it Carolina Blue, since I went to UNC)

versus the marking on the female- which are sepia with

beautiful gold markings on its body.

I was given horrible photos taken on an Iphone, but managed to piece them together along with some research on the breed.

It's varnished and the sides are painted, so it can be hung as is or framed. It's for sale on ebay ending Sunday the 15th. I haven't been posting lately since I haven't been painting lately, I broke my weight bearing bone in my leg just able the ankle on November 29th and have been in a wheelchair ever since. Supposedly I will be getting a "walking cast" on the 18th of the month. It's been difficult since I am normally always on the go - teaching and painting. Here is one of my latest pieces that was completed in mid November. After it was finished, an abstracted landscape popped out at me. This piece, I must admit, is one of my favorites. I don't know if I will sell it or not - maybe hang it awhile at my home..... It's a fairly large acrylic - 36 x 48 on canvas.

I've asked my husband, Bob, to bring up some supplies for me from my studio downstairs. I dying here not painting - so will begin some small pieces (12 x 12) on the dining room table. I also want to play around with cold wax and oil. We'll see what comes of it. Happy New Year to everyone!

Still a work on progress. Made some changes from the last post. Changed my sky and went with an overall darker feel. The idea of layers sort of intrigued me so I went with it. I think I am fairly well done composing this now I just need to refine and bring out the detail, correct color as well as adjust the perspective a bit. Oil on canvas, 11x14.
